THIS IS OLD I NEED TO EDIT.
Until Dawn is a lot of fun in that it plays with horror tropes, and its characters are no exception. Right before you're given control as Sam, she's introduced as Hannah's diligent, considerate and adventurous best friend and opening a menu will tell you that her highest stats are bravery, honesty and being charitable. Not long after, she's hand feeding a squirrel nuts from her bag like a Disney princess and you get the feeling that you've found her: the final girl. And you're not wrong. Sam is the well-meaning good girl. The friendly Sidney Prescott with a heart of gold. She's someone who's lost her two closest friends just one year before but is doing her best to take steps forward and to make sure her friends are, too.
It comes as no surprise that Sam is very easy going and well liked among her friends. She's very friendly towards them, especially in the beginning; she jokes around playfully (low funny stat be damned), not-so-subtly goads Chris about his crush on Ashley and steers clear of the relationship drama between Mike, Matt, Jess and Emily. She reassures Josh that they're all there for him, that they'll persevere together as a group. A prank Chris pulls is even kind of well-received, after some initial defensiveness. Despite being described as a little bit of an odd man out because of her morals, Sam has her place in the group of friends and fits in well among them.
Her role is more about being the voice of reason of the group... the moral compass. The peacekeeper. It's no secret that Sam is confident enough to march to the beat of her own drum and isn't afraid to speak up when something feels wrong— it's what allows her to step up and talk some of the others down. In fact, the first time we meet Sam in the prologue she's trying to convince her friends to call off their malicious prank on Hannah, which we know ends in unfortunate tragedy. She seems to have a clearer image of right and wrong than some of the others, especially in the heat of the moment. Sam is constantly defending her friends from one another without completely taking sides, something she usually kept out of when the only drama they had to deal with was "who's dating who." When something big is happening, Sam is there to placate and diffuse, whether it be a cruel prank or a wendigo bite.
Not that she won't step up and make decisions when it's needed, but Sam is more of a nurturer than a leader. That's more Mike's thing. Sam is the glue that tries to hold everyone together. It's apparent that she has since forgiven the others for the prank from a year ago, and genuinely cares about each and every one of them. When they hurt, she hurts. It's even revealed that Josh had reached out to her after the disappearance of his sisters and that they spent a lot of time together leading up to the anniversary. There are countless scenarios in the game where the group faces loss and trauma, and Sam is typically the first one at a friend's side when it happens. It goes even further than that, to where she is willing to put herself in harm's way for someone else. Her consideration for others almost bleeds into a selflessness that's dangerous, considering the flesh-eating monsters. It's not that she doesn't think of consequences, but that the consequences are worth the risk when it comes to the well-being of her friends. Got a terrifying monster pinning you down? Count on Sam to come smack it with a shovel.
There's a time where she confides in Chris, asking if coming back a year after the incident is the right thing to do and claiming that she wants to do right by Josh since he seems so excited about it. Considering the huge amounts of empathy she shows, there's a good chance that Sam functions by pouring herself into others instead of directly dealing with her own feelings. During her interview with the police, she closes off and insists she's fine when the conversation takes a personal turn. It seems as if she's in a healthy place at first, where the loss of the twins is concerned... that, or she hides it well. Finding Hannah's diary in the mines undoes whatever composure Sam's built up for the past year, though, and her emotions get the best of her. It shakes her like nothing else in the game does (save maybe witnessing Josh's fake death), and she looks dejected from then on. Upon finding Josh, she can't help but to sadly blabber about their findings to him despite the fact that he's in such a terrible state, mentally. This girl's world has been flipped upside down not once, but twice, and it deeply affects her despite her emotional strength.
In a couple of points in the game, she sort powers through and unintentionally leaves people behind, like when she's so focused on getting to Mike to warn him about the wendigos that Ashley gets left behind (and possibly killed), or when she leaves Mike and Josh in the mines in order to get to their friends in the lodge. She worries so much about everyone to the point where she can lose focus on those who are right in front of her. It's hard to be critical about it, since none of them are really equipped to deal with wendigos. On the other hand, as soon as she realizes what's happened in both cases she's outwardly guilt-stricken, like when she grabs Ashley and tells her how glad she is that she's okay upon her return. Sam puts real effort into doing things the best way that she can, but sometimes good intentions just aren't enough.
Although her actress pegs her as a pacifist, it's evident that Sam will resort to violence when it comes to survival, be it her friends' or her own. Dr. Hill even describes her as feisty and strong when singled out from the rest, should you happen to choose her as your most disliked character, and suggests that perhaps she intimidates you. It also helps show how resourceful she is under stress. During her chase with the psycho you have the option of making it her first instinct to throw a vase at her aggressor, and later to smash a baseball bat over his head if he happens to grab her. There's the possibility of finding either a shovel or a long pipe when in the mine, and Sam will not only hang onto whatever she finds, she'll use it to whack a wendigo off of Mike without a moment of hesitation. Her survival instincts are very strong for a seemingly well-off 19 year old girl, but they're usually subdued by her big heart.
